Overhead Stops & Holders

(Showing 36 of 512)

Overhead door stops and holders mount at the top of the door and frame to limit how far the door can open. They protect walls, frames, hinges and closers from damage when a door is pushed open too hard or caught by wind. A stop only limits the opening; a holder also keeps the door open at a set angle until someone pulls it closed.

B&H Depot carries overhead stops and holders from Glynn-Johnson, Rixson and Dorma, in surface mounted and concealed models, medium and heavy duty, with hold-open and stop-only functions.

How to Choose an Overhead Stop or Holder

  • Surface or concealed: surface mounted models are easier to install and retrofit; concealed models are mortised into the door and frame for a cleaner look and better vandal resistance.
  • Duty: choose heavy duty for high-traffic, exterior or abusive locations, and medium duty for interior doors with moderate use.
  • Size: overhead stops are sized by door width. Check the manufacturer's sizing chart for your door width.
  • Degree of opening: pick a model that allows the door to open to the angle you need, typically between 85 and 110 degrees.
  • Handing: some models are handed; confirm left hand or right hand before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an overhead stop and a holder?

A stop limits how far the door opens. A holder does the same and can also keep the door open at a set angle.

How do I size an overhead stop?

Overhead stops are sized by door width. Measure the door width and use the manufacturer sizing chart in the product specifications to pick the right size.

Surface mounted or concealed?

Surface mounted models are easier to install, especially as a retrofit. Concealed models are mortised into the door and frame and are harder to tamper with.

Can I use a hold-open on a fire door?

Fire doors must close and latch in a fire, so mechanical hold-opens are generally not allowed on them. Use a stop-only model, or a magnetic door holder that releases on fire alarm. Check your local fire code.
