Door Bolts

(Showing 36 of 269)

Door bolts secure the inactive leaf of a pair of doors, or add a manual lock to a single door. On a pair, the bolts hold the inactive door in place at the top and bottom so the active door's lock or exit device has something solid to latch against.

B&H Depot carries flush bolts and surface bolts from IVES, Rockwood, Hager and Don Jo, plus dust-proof strikes and accessories.

Types of Door Bolts

  • Manual flush bolts: mortised into the edge of the door and operated by a lever. Clean look; used on interior and exterior pairs that are not fire rated.
  • Automatic and constant latching flush bolts: latch the inactive door automatically when it closes. Used on fire-rated pairs, where both leaves must latch every time.
  • Surface bolts: mounted on the face of the door. Easy to install on existing doors, gates and utility doors.
  • Dust-proof strikes: installed in the floor for bottom bolts, with a spring-loaded plunger that keeps debris out.

How to Choose

  • Door material: metal doors and wood doors use different flush bolt preparations.
  • Fire rating: fire-rated pairs generally need automatic or constant latching flush bolts.
  • Rod length and finish: match the top rod length to your door height and the finish to your other hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a flush bolt and a surface bolt?

A flush bolt is mortised into the edge of the door so it sits flush. A surface bolt mounts on the face of the door and is easier to install on existing doors.

Can I use manual flush bolts on a fire-rated pair of doors?

Fire-rated pairs generally need automatic or constant latching flush bolts so the inactive leaf latches every time. Check your local code and the door label.

Do I need a dust-proof strike?

A dust-proof strike is recommended for bottom flush bolts. It keeps the floor hole clean so the bolt can always engage.
