Electromagnetic Locks

(Showing 9 of 9)

Electromagnetic locks, or maglocks, hold a door closed with an electromagnet mounted on the frame and a steel armature plate mounted on the door. With no moving latch parts, they are durable and quiet, and they are widely used with access control, keypads and intercoms on glass, aluminum, metal and gate openings.

B&H Depot carries maglocks from Securitron, SDC, Locknetics, DynaLock, BEA and Rofu: single and double door models, cabinet and gate locks, and the brackets, housings and accessories needed to mount them.

How Maglocks Work with Life Safety

A maglock is always fail safe: the door unlocks when power is removed. Codes generally require a way to release the lock for free exit, such as a motion request-to-exit sensor, a push-to-exit button and release on fire alarm. Check the requirements of your local building and fire code before installing a maglock on an exit door.

How to Choose a Maglock

  • Holding force: common ratings are around 600 lb for interior doors and 1,200 lb for exterior and high-security doors.
  • Single or double: double maglocks secure pairs of doors from one housing.
  • Mounting: outswing doors usually mount directly; inswing doors and narrow frames may need Z or L brackets, filler plates or a header.
  • Voltage and features: check 12/24 VDC operation and options such as door status, lock status and built-in timers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are maglocks fail safe or fail secure?

Maglocks are fail safe: they unlock when power is removed.

What holding force do I need?

Around 600 lb is common for interior doors and 1,200 lb for exterior and higher-security doors.

Do I need a request-to-exit device with a maglock?

In most cases, yes. Codes generally require a request-to-exit sensor or button and release on fire alarm so people can always get out.

Can I put a maglock on an inswing door?

Yes, with the right bracket. Inswing doors usually need a Z bracket or similar mounting kit.
