About the Schlage L283-561 cam and retaining ring kit
The L283-561 is a Schlage L Series service kit with a cam and retaining ring for 180-degree indicators, used on cylinder and privacy indicator versions of the lock.
Indicator locks show an occupied or locked status on the outside of the door. The cam drives the indicator, and the retaining ring holds the parts in place, so a worn or mismatched cam can stop the indicator from showing the correct status.
