Exit Device Trim Functions Explained: Exit Only, Night Latch, Passage, Classroom and Storeroom

Published by B&H Depot on 28th Oct 2026

An exit device (panic bar) always lets people leave from the inside. The outside trim decides what happens from the other side of the door. The trim function is usually shown as a suffix in the model number, such as EO, NL or L.

Common Trim Functions

  • Exit only (EO): no outside trim. The door cannot be opened from outside.
  • Dummy trim (DT): a pull on the outside with no latch operation, used when the door is left unlatched (dogged) during the day.
  • Night latch (NL): a key on the outside retracts the latch; there is no lever.
  • Passage: the outside lever or pull always operates the latch.
  • Classroom: a key on the outside locks or unlocks the lever.
  • Storeroom: the outside lever is always locked; a key retracts the latch.

Lever Trim and Handing

Lever trim is often handed, so you need the door handing before you order. See our guide on how to determine door handing.

Electrified Trim

Electrified trim lets an access control system lock or unlock the outside lever. It is available in fail safe and fail secure versions.
